Received a DVLA VIN authorisation letter?

VIN Shield UK manufactures replacement VIN plates, chassis identification plates and vehicle identification labels for eligible customers who have received formal instructions or written confirmation from the DVLA.

When DVLA VIN authorisation may be required

A formal DVLA process may apply where a vehicle’s identity cannot be confirmed, where a new identity number is needed, or where an existing VIN must be reapplied following an approved repair or restoration.

01

Replacement identity number

Where the original VIN cannot be proven, DVLA may assess the vehicle and issue an authorisation letter for a new VIN to be stamped.

02

Repairs and restorations

DVLA may confirm that the original VIN held on the vehicle record can be stamped onto a replacement chassis, bodyshell or frame.

03

Kit, rebuilt or altered vehicles

Kit-built, rebuilt, reconstructed or structurally modified vehicles may be subject to separate registration, identity and vehicle approval requirements.

Important distinction A normal damaged or missing manufacturer label does not automatically mean DVLA will issue a VIN authorisation letter. Where the vehicle already has a valid, verifiable VIN, the requirements may be different.

How the process works

VIN Shield UK does not allocate vehicle identity numbers. We manufacture identification products only after checking the information supplied for the order.

1

Apply to DVLA

Follow the official DVLA registration or vehicle identity process. DVLA may request evidence, assessment or inspection depending on the vehicle.

2

Receive written instructions

Where authorised, DVLA will provide written confirmation explaining the VIN that is to be stamped, attached or reapplied.

3

Submit your documents

Send us a clear copy of the letter together with proof of ownership, vehicle details and photographs for review before production.

Products we can manufacture

Frequently asked questions

What is a DVLA VIN authorisation letter?

Where a vehicle cannot retain or prove its original identity, DVLA may assess it and, if accepted, issue authorisation for a new VIN to be stamped. DVLA may also provide written confirmation allowing an existing recorded VIN to be reapplied following certain repairs or restorations.

Can VIN Shield UK issue or approve a VIN?

No. VIN Shield UK is an independent manufacturer. We cannot allocate, authorise or change a VIN. We can manufacture a suitable identification plate or label from authorised details after completing our checks.

Do all replacement VIN labels need a DVLA letter?

No. A vehicle with an existing, verifiable VIN may simply require a replacement identification label. The correct evidence depends on the vehicle, the product and why the original identification is missing or damaged.

Can you stamp the VIN directly onto my vehicle?

This page concerns the manufacture of VIN plates and labels. Where DVLA requires the VIN to be stamped directly into a chassis, bodyshell or frame, use a suitably equipped garage and follow the exact instructions contained in the DVLA letter.

Does buying a VIN plate make my vehicle road legal?

No. A VIN plate or label is an identification product. Registration, type approval, inspections, roadworthiness and legal use remain separate matters for the vehicle owner and the relevant authorities.

Have your DVLA letter ready?

Send clear copies of your documents and vehicle photographs so we can confirm which identification product is suitable before manufacture.
